Tomah, 38, is a self-taught artist who began painting five years ago. Having spent a decade as a political videographer, capturing stories and conjuring ads for campaigns across the country, Tomah not only developed a strong sense for emotion and narrative, he developed a code: make everything you do better than the last. The mix of a growing desire for more creative freedom and some life setbacks led him to take up painting. These days the process of bringing his visions to life on canvas has provided him a sense of joy and accomplishment far beyond anything he ever experienced behind the camera. Now based in Lee’s Summit with his wife and two kids, Tomah actively participates in local art shows where the genuine reactions of people have been both humbling and encouraging. Tomah’s work aims to connect with people and make folks appreciate the world they’re in and the people they’re with. As a feral painter, he works through his intuition, avoids imitating other artists, and tries to use nature’s rules as a guide.
