Marla spent her travels chasing light in two very different parts of the world, and this show brings them together. The Palouse region of eastern Washington is one of the most distinctive landscapes in the Pacific Northwest: rolling hills, sweeping fields, and dramatic patterns drawn by agriculture, especially striking from elevated viewpoints. Sunrise and sunset lay gold, green, brown, blue, and violet across the curves of the land.

Then London. Marla focused on historic architecture and iconic landmarks, from the River Thames and the London Eye to the gothic ceilings of Westminster and cityscapes shot from 58 stories up. Beyond the city, the Cotswolds offered the opposite: honey-colored stone villages, historic churches, gardens, and traditional cottages in places like Lower Slaughter, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Snowshill.

And then there is "I Dreamed of Trees." No digital manipulation beyond converting the negative to black and white. With only black and white elements, Marla says, the image came alive: the lines and patterns sang. Sometimes you capture magic light.

It’s the kind of work that asks you to slow down for a minute. Which, frankly, most of us could use.

Come see it in person

About the artist

Marla Craven is a photographic artist who started in the darkroom with black and white photography. Today all of her work is captured, processed, and printed from digital negatives, on paper, wood, canvas, and metal, using quality dyes and techniques for excellent rendition and longevity.

Her subjects are anything the natural or manmade world presents: moments in time, aspects of the natural world, historic scenes, even specific emotions. There is a story behind every image, and as a photographer she likes to put her personal perspective on every piece.

An avid traveler, Marla has photographed throughout the United States and in South America, Europe, China, Cuba, and Iceland. She shows in local and regional juried shows and belongs to a cooperative gallery to share her work with others. This is her seventh featured artist show at Images Art Gallery.

“I want my images to connect emotionally with the viewer.” — Marla Craven
