Let it Snow
Winter Works by Regional Watercolorist
JR ‘Jim’ Hamil
Opening Reception December 20th 5pm to 8pm
Images is proud to host a nearly 60 year collection of J R Hamil's various ’snow scenes’. These works are timeless reflections of a Kansas City past and the travels of a highly successful and well-recognized regional watercolorist.
Hallmark Winter Road and Barn
My late father JR ‘Jim’ Hamil (1937-2022) was a well-recognized regional watercolorist for well over 50 years prior to his passing in January of 2022. Before his major career shift in 1973, Jim’s 15 years of corporate experience at Hallmark Cards (1958-1973) provided future insight for many of his commercial and commissioned works as a studio artist for the nearly 50 years that followed. Jim would often say, “I paint things that may not outlast the paintings themselves (I hope)…and people like to be reminded of that in pictures.” According to a Prairie Village Sun, 1987 interview with Jim, “Hamil’s first Plaza painting was Plaza Christmas in 1979. He had no idea that it would be so popular until he had 1,000 prints made and placed them in stores to be sold at $25 each.” “They sold out pretty fast and I was quite surprised,” he (Jim) said. “He has done eight of them bearing such names as Plaza Christmas, Plaza Lights and Plaza Winter Night.”… and these were just the Holiday scenes. Eventually there were 31 documented seasonal watercolors of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza and the limited edition prints generated from these originals were often ‘sold out’ within a year of their release. My goal is to bring forward many of those remaining prints and several original works; just featuring snow and are still available for sale to the public. All sales go toward the maintenance, furthering the research and offering a better understanding of the JR ‘Jim’ Hamil Legacy Collection. In Conclusion: I’ve brought together a nearly 60 year collection of Dad’s various ’snow scenes’ to celebrate his appreciation for capturing nostalgia. Though climate change has certainly had its impact on classics such as “Loose Park Skaters” (1980) and dynamic social change in “Plaza Carriages” (1987); these works remain timeless reflections of a Kansas City past and the more seasonal travels of a highly successful and well-recognized regional watercolorist.
